Tony Blair took Britain into the Iraq War because of his "love of power", it was claimed yesterday.

Former director of public prosecutions Sir Ken Macdonald said the ex-PM "misled and cajoled" people into supporting the "deadly" invasion.

Sir Ken's attack came after Mr Blair used the BBC's Fern Britton show on Sunday to say he would have gone to war regardless of whether Saddam Hussein had WMDs.

Sir Ken wrote in The Times: "This was a foreign policy disgrace of epic proportions and playing footsie on Sunday morning television does nothing to repair the damage.

"Mr Blair's fundamental flaw was his sycophancy towards power.

"Washington turned his head and he couldn't resist the stage or the glamour that it gave him." Mr Blair will appear before the Iraq inquiry early next year.
